Deconstructing the Architecture of Awakening: Stephen Wolinsky’s Framework on Portals to the Absolute
For generations, spiritual seekers have followed well-traveled paths: meditating on the root sense of existence, cultivating witness consciousness, chasing enlightenment, and reaching for states of pure bliss or non-dual awareness. Yet what happens when the very tools designed to liberate us become our final gilded cages?
Stephen Wolinsky—drawing on a synthesis of Western psychology, Advaita Vedanta, and his direct study under Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj—offers a pragmatic, down-to-earth approach to non-duality. Rather than introducing yet another technique to master, his framework systematically breaks down how we conceptualise ultimate reality, how we navigate spiritual gateways, and how easily we fall into the trap of subtle conceptual beliefs.
Understanding “Portals”
Because our everyday mind is thoroughly conditioned by past habits and ingrained beliefs, it cannot grasp pure, unconditioned reality directly. In Wolinsky’s view, a portal or pointer is simply any tool, concept, esoteric phenomenon, or meditation practice designed to shift focus away from the personal ego and toward a broader field of presence.
Practices such as self-inquiry (“Who am I?”) or resting in basic presence serve as vital stepping stones. They shift your reference point away from the physical body and narrative thoughts, anchoring your identity instead in simple awareness. Common examples include any exercise that highlights the quiet feeling of just being before the mind layers on personal stories, status, or anxieties.
Deconstructing the Six Portals
In classic Advaita fashion, Wolinsky deconstructs each portal, emphasising that mistaking any impermanent state for ultimate truth creates a spiritual trap. Realising the Absolute—that which exists prior to consciousness, space, time, and form—requires seeing through and dismantling every portal along the way.
1. The Portal of Sound
Practitioners often encounter subtle inner sounds (nada), internal reverberations, or sacred frequencies like Om. Yet sound inherently requires an observer to perceive it and a medium through which to travel. Because sound is an arising-and-passing phenomenon within awareness, it is an effect or manifestation rather than the ultimate source.
2. The Portal of Light
Encounters with luminous visions, white light, or visual illumination are common in deep meditation. However, light remains an object of perception. For light to be known, there must be a Knower prior to it. Light is merely a modification of subtle energy, not the Absolute itself.
3. The Portal of Energy and Vibration
Energetic body flows, Kundalini awakenings, and subtle vibrations move and fluctuate continuously. The Absolute, by contrast, is immovable, changeless, and prior to motion. Energy and vibration are simply temporary appearances arising within consciousness.
4. The Portal of Emptiness or Void
Experiencing vast space, a dark void, or profound stillness devoid of form feels ultimate. Yet the void itself remains a condition being witnessed. If you can report that “there was nothing,” your presence was required to witness that nothingness. The Absolute is prior even to space and emptiness.
5. The Portal of Consciousness and Awareness
Resting in pure witnessing or cosmic unity feels expansive, but consciousness itself comes and goes—fading in deep sleep or under anaesthesia. The sense of presence or “I Am-ness” is an appearance, whereas the Absolute is prior to consciousness itself.
6. The Portal of Beingness (“I Am”)
The core feeling of existence (Sat-Chit-Ananda) acts as the primary springboard to the Absolute. Yet even the basic feeling “I Am” is the initial projection of manifestation—an appearance that ultimately depends on the Absolute to exist.
Individual Conditioning and the Emerging Path
Portals vary naturally from person to person because every mind possesses a unique psychological structure and conditioning. Spirituality frequently suffers from a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach, ignoring the fact that what quietens one mind will not work for another.
- Analytical Minds: Quantum physics, self-inquiry, and direct examination may serve as the most effective portals.
- Devotional Minds: Chanting (Bhakti), light, sound, or energetic flow might open the door more naturally.
Following Nisargadatta Maharaj’s instruction to “forget the teachings, forget the guru, and just stay in consciousness,” Wolinsky emphasises that abiding directly in the pure feeling of “I Am”—without relying on past memory or dogma—allows your organic, unique path to emerge naturally.
The Hidden Trap and the End of Seeking
Wolinsky cautions that all portals are temporary states within the mind. Clinging to any specific portal turns a doorway into a “nesting spot” or subtle trap. The Absolute is not a state, portal, or experience, nor can it be known as an object, because it is the fundamental Unknowable prior to perception itself.
Spiritual tools frequently harden into new layers of conditioning. When we mistake the map for the territory, we build a refined “spiritual ego” that boasts of being a non-dual practitioner. As long as you maintain the identity of a seeker using a method to reach a future goal, you keep the separate self alive.
Real liberation occurs only when the whole concept of a journey collapses, allowing you to settle comfortably into simple not-knowing.
Stephen Wolinsky’s core conclusion is radical in its simplicity: The search itself is the final distraction. True awakening begins only when you dismantle the architecture of seeking altogether.
