Wave Function

Wave Functions and the Mystery of Collapse

Before a quantum particle is measured, it does not sit in one single, fixed state. Instead, it exists as a range of possibilities shaped by a mathematical rule called the Schrödinger equation, which changes smoothly over time.

The biggest mystery in quantum mechanics—and in quantum psychology—is the conflict between two basic rules:

  1. Continuous Growth: Left on its own, a system’s wave function spreads out smoothly, including all possible states.
  2. Sudden Collapse: The moment someone observes the system, the wave function instantly drops all other possibilities, forcing the system into a single real outcome.

Major Interpretations of the Collapse

Physics offers a few different explanations for how and why this collapse happens. Each gives us an interesting way to think about human consciousness:

  • The Copenhagen Explanation: Created by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, this view says collapse is a natural part of the universe. The act of measuring forces reality to choose a path. In this view, the wave function is not a physical object, but a map of what we know and what might happen.
  • The Many-Worlds Explanation: Proposed by Hugh Everett III, this theory says collapse never actually happens. Instead, every possible outcome occurs, splitting the universe into parallel worlds where different versions of an observer experience different results.
  • Quantum Decoherence: This idea shows that quantum systems constantly leak information into their surroundings. This explains why large, everyday objects look solid and predictable rather than quantum, though scientists still debate whether it fully solves the role of the observer.
  • Objective Collapse Theories: Models like the Ghirardi–Rimini–Weber theory suggest that collapse happens naturally on its own once a system becomes heavy or complex enough, with no need for a human observer.

Ultimately, whether collapse is caused by an observer, splits the universe into endless parallel realities, or happens on its own due to complexity, the wave function remains a powerful link between what could happen and what actually does. Despite decades of scientific research, the mystery of collapse is still unsolved. Each explanation gives us a helpful idea to work with, but none has been proven true or accepted by everyone. Exploring these different views helps us appreciate the atomic world and offers useful ways to understand how our minds deal with uncertainty, turn endless possibilities into single choices, and shape our reality.

What This Means for Reiki Practice

The way wave functions work gives us a helpful framework for understanding energy work and spiritual healing:

  • The Intuitive Field as Possible Energy States: Before a session starts, a person’s energetic and physical state holds many possibilities. Healing, emotional release, and balance are all hidden options within this field. The Reiki practitioner acts as a present, focused observer whose conscious attention helps settle these endless possibilities into real physical and emotional balance.
  • The Power of Focused Attention: Similar to the Copenhagen view, the practitioner’s calm, caring presence acts as the “observation” needed to settle mixed-up energy patterns. By staying neutral and focused, the practitioner helps stagnant or chaotic energy settle into deep relaxation and self-healing.
  • Grounding Energy: Just as quantum decoherence shows how fragile quantum states connect with their environment to become solid reality, Reiki helps people ground subtle energy changes into physical reality. The treatment acts as a bridge, helping higher energy states fit naturally into everyday life.
  • Sudden Healing Shifts: Similar to Objective Collapse Theories, emotional or energetic releases during Reiki often happen all at once after enough energy or deep relaxation builds up. Practitioners often see a person’s body suddenly release long-held tension without conscious effort, as if the energy system hit a tipping point and reset itself.

Self-Reflection Questions

  1. How do you usually act when faced with many options, and what helps you move from thinking about choices to making a final decision?
  2. How is your behaviour or thinking changed simply by knowing someone is watching or judging you?
  3. When something important does not go your way, do you think about the other paths your life could have taken?
  4. At what point does a stressful or complex situation reach a limit where things suddenly fall into place or break down?
  5. How do you balance the comfort of keeping all your options open with the need to commit to real actions and outcomes?
