How To Write Your Definite Chief Aim
Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich (1937), said:

“Anything the mind of man can conceive and believe it can be achieved.”

Any definite chief aim that is deliberately fixed in the mind and held there, with the determination to realize it, finally saturates the entire subconscious mind until it automatically influences the physical action of the body toward the attainment of that purpose”.

Without purpose, Hill believes people often spread their thoughts and energies in so many different directions that “lead not to power, but to indecision and weakness.”

Earl Nightingale

I remember one time I was driving through eastern Arizona and I saw one of those giant earth-moving machines roaring along the road at about 30 miles an hour with what looked like 30 tons of dirt in it, a tremendous, incredible machine. There was a little man perched way up on top with the wheel in his hands, guiding it.

As I drove along, I was struck by the similarity of that machine to the human mind. Just suppose you’re sitting at the controls of such a vast source of energy. Are you going to sit back and fold your arms and let it run itself into a ditch? Or are you going to keep both hands firmly on the wheel and control and direct this power to a specific, worthwhile purpose? It’s up to you. You’re in the driver’s seat.

You see, the very law that gives us success is a two-edged sword. We must control our thinking. The same rule that can lead a man to a life of success, wealth, happiness, and all the things he ever dreamed of for himself and his family, that very same law can lead him into the gutter. It’s all in how he uses it, for good or for bad. That is the strangest secret in the world.

How To Write Your Definite Chief Aim

A definite chief aim is a specific, clearly-defined statement of purpose in which you are looking to achieve an outcome, a desired state externalised in reality.

It has the power to guide your subconscious mind.

The goal of the Definite Chief Aim is to bring forth your desire from the perspective of spirit of harmony.

Your definite aim statement is knowing where you are headed and what you ultimately want to achieve and not lose sight within a time frame.

Many of us get caught in our daily errands and personal challenges we end up forgetting the important goals in life, and realising that the entire year went by and we are still stuck in the same place. Writing a chief aim statement and committing to it will help you stay focused on the where what, who or why we want to accomplish another level.

Your definite chief aim statement has to be something you are obsessed with, a goal that moves you forward instead of pulling you back. It supposes to be specific, clear to your purpose, it transforms your attitude into a positive and confident outlook.

Many of us don’t fully pursue our goals because of our beliefs. We don’t all grow up in positive environments. We grow up hearing things like

” Only the rich get rich”

” Without higher education, you won’t achieve anything”

” We don’t have luck”, or

” You have to know people in order to become successful”.

Its all in our subconscious mind but with a chief aim statement, we can alter our belief system and encourage new ways of doing a thing.

When you have defined and adopted your definite chief aim, or definiteness of purpose, you will have focus. When you have focus you will know what you want, when you want it, why you want it and how you intend to obtain it or accomplish it.

A definite chief aim statement has a format to follow when writing it down.

1. Be specific. Choose words that clearly express your definite chief aim. What do you want to do? What legacy do you want to leave that will inspire others? How can your greatest strengths and gifts breathe good into the world?

2. Choose a specific date that you want to accomplish your definite chief aim.

3. Determine what you will do in exchange for this compensation. Who will benefit from your services or products? What do they want or need? How are they changed?

4. Create a plan for achieving what you desire. It need not be a specific outline; express in general terms how you plan to reach your goals.

5. Combine elements of these statements listed above into one or two sentences. It must include (a) what you desire to do, (b) financial compensation you expect to receive for what you are willing to do, (c) a time deadline, and (d) a plan to reach your goal(s).

6. Sign and date your definite chief aim.

When you complete your definite chief aim, put it somewhere where you can repeat it to yourself every morning when you wake up and before you go to bed at night.

Visualise your success as you repeat this statement to yourself. It must fill you with excitement and enthusiasm as you read and feel it.
